Impact of Extreme Heat on Human Behavior

This intriguing article explores how extreme heat can have an influence on human behaviour. It emphasises increased aggression, cognitive decline, and reduced productivity as key outcomes of rising temperatures.

Particularly, it notes the disproportionate impact on lower income communities and countries, which often lack the resources for effective cooling solutions.

The Science Behind Willful Ignorance

This article delves into the phenomenon of willful ignorance, where research from the American Psychological Association reveals that 40% of people prefer not to know the impact of their actions on others, often to justify selfish behaviour.

This choice allows individuals to maintain a positive self-image while avoiding altruistic actions. A meta-analysis of 22 studies with over 6,500 participants showed that being informed of the consequences of one's actions led to more altruistic behaviour. The findings suggest societal pressures and self-perception play significant roles in altruistic decisions, highlighting the complexity behind choosing ignorance to ease the moral dilemma of not acting selflessly.

Impact of Shouting at Children

This article highlights a study suggesting that shouting at children can have consequences as severe as those from physical or sexual abuse.

Conducted by researchers at University College London and Wingate University, the study reviews existing literature to understand better the impacts of verbal abuse on children. The findings emphasise the need for a consistent definition of verbal abuse, which includes behaviours like belittling, shouting, and threats, and its long-term effects such as increased risks of anger, depression, substance abuse, self-harm, and obesity. The study advocates for acknowledging verbal abuse as a distinct subtype of maltreatment to improve prevention and intervention strategies.

Boy Swallows Universe

This week I have been indulging in Boy Swallows Universe - a limited series on Netflix following the story of a 13-year-old boy’s battles of the demons that haunt his family as he barrels toward adulthood.

The show, based on the book of the same name by bestselling author Trent Dalton, was inspired by Dalton's own atypical childhood in Brisbane, Australia.
